Board Discusses Moving School Elections to November

The Livingston Board of Education on Monday evening discussed a proposed resolution to move its election of school board members from April to the general election in November. The resolution, which was tabled, would also eliminate the public vote on the annual school budget if it is within the statutory two per cent cap.

A bill, recently approved by the State legislature and signed into law by governor Chris Christie, gives municipalities the right to decide on the issue. As part of the bill, school elections may be moved from April to November and school budgets will no longer require voter approval when the spending plans' increases fall within the two per cent cap allowed by the state. Only the amount which exceeds the cap would have to be presented for voter approval in November.
