Livingston, NJ's very own Social Network

Asian Indians in Livingston (AILIV) held its second annual Garba night on October 9 in the Livingston High School gym. Originated in Gujarat, India, Garba is similar to social dancing and celebrates the Indian festival of Navratri (which basically means "Nine Nights"). AILIV's celebration of the Festival of Navratri attracted more than 350 people to hear and dance to live music performed by Sur Madhur, a group based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Throughout the night, the crowd danced in a huge circle around the idol. The dancing began with a slow tempo and reached a crescendo after several hours of music. The rhythm was kept by a Dholi or a drummer who sat on the stage.
