United Way of North Essex Helps to Brighten Holidays

The United Way of North Essex’ annual holiday campaign is now underway. The Holiday Fund is a non-sectarian program which provides food and financial support during the holiday season and throughout the winter months to needy families with children as well as the elderly. This year’s goal is $30,000.

Recreation Courts Gain New Life

The four Northland tennis courts and two Memorial Park basketball courts benefitted from an Essex County Open Space Grant of $225,000 which allowed the Township of Livingston to resurface these popular facilities. The grant money also provided for $20,000 to finish work on Prospect Park.

Special Education Parents Hear Draft Proposal for New Committee

The first of several special education workshop meetings was held on Wednesday, November 17. The meeting was led by superintendent of schools, Dr. Brad Draeger, along with special education consultant Thomasina McBride. Last month Dr. Draeger had called a meeting with all special education parents in the district to introduce them to McBride, who has been hired to help the district form a parent advocacy group. School Board Appoints Assistant Superintendent; Hears Construction Plans and Test Results

The Livingston Board of Education met on Monday, November 22, and announced the hiring of a new assistant superintendent of schools. The Board approved the appointment of a new assistant superintendent of student services, Lawrence Russell. Russell, who replaces the retiring Patrick Keenoy, is coming to Livingston from Clark County, Nevada with a background as a special education teacher. West Essex YMCA Swim Team Makes Splash at Fall Festival Meet of X-Cellence

The West Essex YMCA (WEY) swim team sent 12 swimmers to the competitive Fall Festival Meet of X-Cellence, held at Princeton University on November 13 and 14. Comedy Club Stars To Appear in Livingston

For one night only, Saturday, December 4, top comedians from the New York, Atlantic City, and Las Vegas comedy club circuits will appear at Hanukkah Hilarity Comedy Night, an evening of stand-up comedy at Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston. Pianist Terance An To Perform In NYC

Livingston High School senior Terence An will perform at the Cecilian Music Club Young Artist Competition Winners' Recital on Saturday, December 4, at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City. An is the winner of the 2010 Cecilian Music Club Young Artist Competition. He won the competition and performed at the venue in 2009, as well.

Township Nurses Collect Cell Phones for Soldiers

The Nursing Division of the Livingston Health Department is once again teaming up with the Ronald J. Ruben Foundation to collect cellular telephones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers Campaign. The Health Department will be collecting cell phones from November through January. Cell phones can be dropped off at the Town Hall, the Hillside Avenue community center (both upper and lower lobby levels) and at the Livingston Public Library during normal business hours.…

West Essex YMCA Receives Grant In Support of Youth Programs

The West Essex YMCA of Livingston was recently awarded a $2,500 grant from PepsiCo, as part of Pepsi's Healthy Living Program. "We are very grateful to PepsiCo for their continued support of our Youth Programs," said Helen Flores, executive director of the West Essex YMCA.

NCJW Volunteers Launch New Program To Connect With Homebound Seniors

The NCJW Volunteer Network, located in Livingston, has announced its newest program: the Telephone Reassurance Program. This free, nonsectarian program will provide a "warm and friendly" voice to check in on a homebound senior. The Volunteer Network will arrange for weekly calls from trained volunteers providing a personal connection to the homebound client from someone who cares and listens.

Harlem Wizards Visit Livingston

The Harlem Wizards will face the Livingston Hot Shots on Sunday, December 5, at Livingston High School, from 2 to 4 p.m. The game will raise funds to benefit Type 1 diabetes and the Boys' Basketball Parents Association of Livingston High School.

Local Residents Publish Books

Livingston residents and Chinese authors Susan S.W. Cai and Edwin P.W. Leung announced the publication of new books at a meeting of members of the branch of the Chinese Literature Group, Wen Xin She, in North Brunswick recently. They are two of the nine writers, most of whom are first generation living in America, who have published books on China in 2010.

Gift Wrap Booth Opens November 26 at Mall

Livingston High School's Project Graduation gift wrap booth will open at the Livingston Mall on Friday, November 26, and will remain open through Friday, December 24. The gift wrap booth is the major fund-raiser for Project Graduation, an all-night, drug-free, tobacco-free, alcohol-free party for the LHS graduating class.
