2nd Grade Laxers Compete in Festival

The second graders of the Livingston Youth Lacrosse League traveled to Florham Park recently to participate in the Festival for Fun. The young Lancers entered two separate teams in the tournament to represent the town of Livingston. The overall concept of the festival was for the players to have fun playing the game of lacrosse.

Troop 16 Takes Two Hiking Trips

Scouts and leaders from Livingston Boy Scout Troop 16 backpacked for two days and covered 15 miles along the Appalachian Trail (AT) in New Jersey as one of the requirements for the Hiking Merit Badge. Troop members also hiked ten miles on the Palisades Trail in New Jersey and New York as one of the requirements for the Hiking Merit Badge.

Church to Hold Softball Tournament

Full Gospel Church of Livingston will hold its second annual softball tournament. The tournament is being held on August 14 at Mt. Pleasant Middle School and is open to 14 men’s softball teams. The tournament is being held as a fund raiser for the Full Gospel Church Youth Center that is currently under construction. The West Essex Tribune office will be open on Friday and Monday, July 2 and 5. The deadline for news and advertising will remain at noon on Tuesday, July 6. Donate to V.A. Hospital

Livingston's Dan Michelson Post 740 of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA recently donated $1,000 to the Veterans' Administration Hospital in East Orange. Kenneth H. Mizrach, director of the Department of Veterans' Affairs, New Jersey Health Care System, accepted the check from Post Commander Norman Gudema and post member Murray Sklar.

Curbside Garbage Collection Starts Today

Starting today, Thursday, July 1, residential garbage pickup will change. The previous rear yard collection of solid waste in containers from behind houses ended on June 30 and the township now has a curbside collection program.



Bids are currently being sought for a contract for the collection, removal and disposal of solid waste, which will begin on Wednesday, September 1, and will include an optional service for continuing rear yard pick-up for residents.…

Livingston's Bravest Extinguish Fire At Commercial Building on Dorsa Ave.

Livingston's firefighters spent the better part of Tuesday afternoon extinguishing a blaze at a commercial building located at 87 Dorsa Avenue.



A general alarm was sounded on Tuesday, June 29, following reports of smoke coming from the commercial building. While firefighters were heading to the scene, emergency dispatchers received several 9-1-1 calls regarding flames and sounds of explosions at the location.

Day of Activities Precedes Annual July 4 Fireworks

The July Fourth Committee has announced the events planned for Sunday, July 4, at the Memorial Park complex and adjacent areas. This year, the committee has planned several major changes to the day’s programs.The amusements and rides, previously located adjacent to Memorial Pool, have been moved to the north side of the oval, under the trees for shade protection.

Team Landroids Wins National Competition; Is Selected to Proceed in Moonbots Challenge

Livingston’s Team Landroids has continued to excel in both science research and robotics design. The team, which placed first in FIRST LEGO League US Open in 2009, has won the eighth grade national award in eCYBERMISSION, and was selected as among the top 20 teams in the international Google Moonbots challenge.

Police Investigate Rash of Burglaries

Livingston police are investigating two burglaries and one attempted burglary which occurred this week. In addition, they have arrested a Neptune man for an unrelated attempted burglary.



Joyce Ventresca of 298 East Cedar Street called 9-1-1 shortly before 5 p.m. on June 24 to report that someone had attempted to kick in her front door. Ventresca told police that she had heard someone knock at the door but she had not answered.…

Council Approves Municipal Budget with 4.4% Increase; Closes Hearing But Holds on Vote Pending State Budget

Following a lengthy hearing on Monday evening, the Township Council approved a 2010 municipal budget

which reflects a 4.4% increase in the cost to run the township. The proposed budget includes a change to curbside collection of garbage; however, the members of the Council announced a plan which would provide options for individual home owners to pay an additional fee for rear yard collection

Arrest Second Teenager For McDonald's Break-In

A 16 year old Newark youth surrendered to Livingston police this week in connection with the June 14 attempted burglary at the McDonald's restaurant at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. A 17 year old Irvington youth was apprehended and charged shortly after the incident. The names of both youths were withheld due to their ages.

Board of Education Hires Principals for Elementary Schools

New principals for Mt. Pleasant Elementary School and for Burnet Hill School were approved by the Board of Education on Monday evening.



Natalie Kosonocky, will be the principal at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, effective September 1. Kosonocky, a 1995 graduate of Rutgers University with a bachelor’s degree. WALK MS

Local participants walked either 5K or 10K along with more than 200,000 walkers at 600 sites across the country recently to raise money to find the cure for multiple sclerosis. Chad Loventhal and Dillon Fabisch of Livingston joined fellow students at Temple B'nai Abraham's Religious School in collecting funds for the Walk MS. The school's administrative assistant Bonnie McCarthy participated in the walk with her team, Bonnie's Buddies.…

Board Hears Safety Report

In the wake of reduced school bussing for safety reasons, the Board of Education asked superintendent of schools Dr. Brad Draeger to report on the walking routes within the township to determine final bussing.

B’nai Jeshurun Welcomes New Rabbi

Congregation B’nai Jeshurun will welcome Rabbi Karen R. Perolman to the bima on Friday, July 2, for her first sermon as one of the rabbis of the Temple. As a student, Rabbi Perolman served a rabbinic internship at B’nai Jeshurun.



Officially beginning her tenure on July 1, Rabbi Perolman will work with Rabbi Matthew D. Gewirtz, Cantor Howard M. Stahl and Rabbi Matthew A. Reimer, to teach and minister to members of the congregation.…

Firefighters Battle Blaze in Passaic Ave. Home; Assist Roseland FD With Apparent Suicide Scene

The Livingston Fire Department battled a house fire and assisted the Roseland Fire Department at an apparent suicide scene this week. Volunteer firefighters responded to 40 Passaic Avenue after a general alarm was sounded for a house fire on Thursday, June 17. Upon arrival, fire officials found an active fire in the rear area of the home, which belongs to Lidia Dumytsch.
