August 26, 2009 A Tribute
My husband, Joe, wrote the following in an email to our children early this morning:
"I am very sad today... an era has come to an end... the last liberal icon has died and I don't know who will pick up the mantle?? I have followed the Kennedy's since 1959. I was 14 years old when John started running for president. I have never stopped being a fan of this brave family. I will never forget when Ted went into the Senate, or when he ran for president and yes, I will never forget the personal situations that made news. One great joy, with Ted Kennedy... Dana actually working for him... I never would have thought, as a boy, that my children would actually work on the Hill (Joey, Dana and Hannah) and one for Ted Kennedy. I will never forget when I drove him to a labor rally for (then NJ Governor) McGreevey. You know, after all the tragedy the family experienced, Ted could have lived his life in the shadows, but chose to continue pursuing the "dream". I am sad today, because America has lost the last champion for those who are less fortunate. We have lost a man who truly attempted to make the lives of people better. America has lost a man who truly attempted to make the lives of people better. America has lost a giant who fought for equality and fairness..... Who will pick up the mantle?? Papa"
