Calabria Restaurant & Pizzeria left a comment for UNICO - Livingston Chapter
Welcome!
UNICO NATIONAL
UNICO is the largest Italian American service organization in the nation; our motto is “Service Above Self”. UNICO was founded in 1922 in Waterbury, Connecticut by a group of 15 men of Italian descent who performed charitable, educational and patriotic deeds for the benefit of their fellow men and country. The name UNICO was chose as it means “unique” in Italian. It asks its members to make sacrifices, not for personal gain, but for services to others.
The idea then spread slowly to several other cities in the East. The first convention was held in 1930 in New York City. In 1931, a similar organization was started in Omaha, Nebraska, named the National Italian Civic League and it spread to 15 cities in the West. Both groups came together at a convention on July 4, 1947 and formed UNICO National with headquarters in Waterbury, CT., and now in Fairfield, NJ.
Later, the letters in UNICO were to represent the attributes it looks for within its members: - Unity - Neighborliness - Integrity - Charity - Opportunity - to serve others
LIVINGSTON UNICO
Livingston UNICO was founded July 6, 1955. The first president was Mr. John Ricotta. Mr. Ricotta had originally formed an Italian American club called Sons of Italian Americans. Ed DeFeo of Newark UNICO Chapter heard of it and came up to one of the meetings to talk about UNICO and thus Livingston UNICO Chapter was founded with sixty plus Chartered Members. Livingston UNICO is a member of New Jersey District XI.
Livingston UNICO raises funds through various events and distributes the funds to local charities, worthy non-profit organizations and local volunteer groups. In addition, we award scholarships to local high school seniors who have attained high academic standing and demonstrated strong citizenship values.
MONTHLY MEETINGS
From September through June, we hold dinner meetings on the third Wednesday of every month, at 7 pm at the Hanover Manor, E. Hanover, NJ. During the year we also have several social affairs.
