A flyer and e-mail is being distributed throughout Livingston urging a “no” vote on the referendum. I would like to address the inaccuracies included in that message.

• The finances of the Livingston Board of Education and the Township of Livingston ARE NOT ONE IN THE SAME.

• Livingston Public Schools is asking for voter approval to borrow up to $33.6 million for facility upgrades and needed repairs to the 6 elementary and 2 middle schools. While the total cost is $56 million, the State of New Jersey has awarded Livingston $22.4 million. A competitive bidding process will take place after the results of today’s vote are determined. It does not mean the District has to spend all of the money. In fact, Livingston Public Schools has a history of not spending the maximum amount that voters approved and returning savings to taxpayers.

• The facility upgrades and repairs included in today’s Referendum will need to be done within the next 5 years. We can do it now at a guaranteed 60% of the total cost or do it later at possibly 100% of the total cost.

• Livingston Public Schools is also asking for voter approval to borrow up to $8.6 million for the purchase and installation of solar panels on the elementary and middle schools and high school. While the solar panels will pay for themselves within the first year of operation, they cannot be approved unless Bond Proposal #1 (facility upgrades and repairs) is approved.

• A “no” vote does not mean that streets will be paved and improved. A “no” vote does not mean better salaries for township employees and teachers.

Livingston Public Schools has been transparent throughout this process. If you have outstanding questions or are concerned about the information you have been provided by the e-mail urging a “no” vote” or by the flyers left on windshields of cars, please feel free to call me at (973) 535-8000 ext. 8036 or e-mail me at jganz@livingston.org. You can also learn more about the referendum by visiting our website here.

Depending upon where you are going, you could take 287 toward Morristown...it swings around and you end up at the Outerbridge Crossing. Before that though, there are outlets to Routes 1 and 9, plus to other highways. It can be roundabout though, but it's an alternate route if you need it. There is also construction on the parkway near Perth Amboy.

Traffic - Avoid using Rt. 24/78 to Parkway

Currently, even at non-rush hour times, you will sit over 20 minutes for a couple miles back to just reach the GSP exit ramp because of the ongoing road construction right at this exit. DON'T take Rt. 24 /78. Alternate routes could be 280 to Parkway or Turnpike. Anyone know of another route to head south?
